"Do you see what I see?"

Going to the optomitrist for an eye exam jogged thoughts of the phrase “What you see is what you get.” According to our Owner’s Manual we see things unseen through the lenses of hope. Or to put in photographic terms “What we focus on is what develops.”
Is the glass half full or half empty? I've heard it said that sometimes in the Christian life the glory is so thick you can walk on it!
Let’s face it, it can take a romantic, a clown or a fool to get their hopes up. Remember Don Quixote seeing the Dulcinea in Aldonza? Or that little boy who was so happy when he found a pile of manure on Christmas morning that his father asked why? "I'm looking for the pony that came with this!" Or that tiny little ant whose got high hopes, way up in the sky up hopes “Whoops there goes another rubber tree plant!” (Google the song and movie.)
So, what am I hoping for? What am I seeing? And what’s God got to do with it? (I can hear it now. Tina Turner singing in the background ‘What’s love got to do with it?) Do something bold today. Dare to get your hopes up!
Unsure how to? Take these scriptures as your new prescription and try ‘em on for a new outlook on life:
“For in this hope we were saved. Now hope that is seen is not hope. For who hopes for what he sees? But if we hope for what we do not see, we wait for it with patience”. Romans 8:24-25
Faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen”. Hebrews 11:1
Surprise! Surprise! Life is a surprise. Open up your eyes and see… a whole new world!!

To Be A Joyologist

"Seek and Ye Shall Find"
Ologist - Any person in search of or knowledgeable of.

Joy - Joy (Greek: chara, Latin: gaudium
Greek for 'joy' is chara, derived from the word charis for 'grace.' Produced by God. True 'joy' is divine in its origin that flourishes best in hard times. The Greek strongly implies that this supernatural joy is due to the Holy Spirit working in us. According to Nehemiah 8:10, "The joy of the Lord is your strength".
A Joyologist: An ordinary person who believes joy is their birthright.

How to be a Joyologist. Look to our source- God the foundation and font of all, including Joy. Next, follow the course-aligning our actions, attitudes and interactions with the attitude of gratitude.

Attitude - Joyologists aren't free of bumps or bruises. They navigate through negative thoughts by 'recalculating'- concentrating on the positive ones.

Gratitude - Joyologists don't worry over and over, lament over what-might-have-beens or get caught up in "someday...". Joyologists learn to slow down and appreciate things in life: a breathtaking sunset, a special conversation, a delicious meal. Joyologists treasure their relationships. Grateful for every moment, Joyologists don't put off the experiences that add to their lives.

Are you a Joyologist? Well, you certainly can be -  no degree required.

Grateful to, acknolwedgement of and permisssion from Father Joe Sica from Becoming Healers for Jesus Lent 2012, 23es Publications.

Compelled to Clown

Why from a ‘Clown’s’ Eye View? The simple answer - I am a clown, at heart. The lengthier answer - I believe in the Good News of Jesus Christ. Yes, the good news: God loves us. He sent His Son and saved us. But there’s more!: God is good and He made us good. We’re good! We often miss that or ‘forgedaboudit’.

Origins of the word clown connect it clod, as in clod of earth. Reminds me of how God scooped up the clay in the second creation story and made Himself a man. In the first creation story God said it was ‘good’ after each thing He created, but after He created man in His own image and likeness He said ‘very good’!

Life is difficult. No newsflash there. The clown’s job is to see this life differently, to bring up what’s down and bring down what’s up and find fortune in misfortune like a Don Quixote- who actually saw things in their truest light. Would you rather me join you in a pity party or a tale of doom and gloom going on and on about how everything is going to the dogs? Wouldn’t you agree helping you laugh in or at the situation is a better way to go?  My favorite book says “A cheerful heart is good medicine.”

I believe I was put on this earth to help remind us of the lighter side, to lighten up. After all there was a Resurrection after the crucifixion! Soooo…. Did you hear the one about… (it’s a bit long but well worth it in the end)
Forrest Gump Goes to Heaven

 The day finally arrived.
 Forrest Gump dies and goes to Heaven.
He’s at the Pearly Gates, met by Saint Peter himself.
However, the gates are closed,
and Forrest approaches the gatekeeper.

Saint Peter said, 'Well, Forrest,
it is certainly good to see you.
We have heard a lot about you.
I must tell you, though, that the place is filling
up fast,  and we have been administering
an entrance examination for everyone.
The test is short, but you have to
pass it before you can get into Heaven.'

Forrest responds, 'It sure is good to be here, Saint Peter, sir.

But nobody ever told me about any entrance
exam. I sure hope that the test ain't too hard.
Life was a big enough test as it was.'

Saint Peter continued, 'Yes, I know,
 Forrest, but the test is only three questions.

First:
What two days of the week
begin with the letter T?

Second:
How many seconds are there in a year?

Third:
What is God's first name?'

Forrest replied, 'Well, the
first one -- which two
days in the week begins with the letter 'T'?
Shucks, that one is easy.
That would be Today and Tomorrow . . .'

The Saint's eyes opened wide exclaiming
'Forrest, that is not what I was thinking, but you
Do have a point, and I guess I did not specify,
so I will give you credit for that answer.
How about the next one?' asked Saint Peter.

'How many seconds in a year?
Now that one is harder,' replied Forrest,
'but I thunk and thunk about that,
and I guess the only answer can be twelve.'

Astounded, Saint Peter said, 'Twelve?
Twelve?  Forrest, how in Heaven's name
could you come up with twelve seconds in a year?'

Forrest replied, 'Shucks, there's
January 2nd, February 2nd, March 2nd . . .'

'Hold it,' interrupts Saint Peter.
  'I see where you are going with this, and
I see your point, though that was not quite
what I had in mind . . . but I will have to give
you credit for that one, too.
Let us go on with the third and final question.
Can you tell me God's first name'?

'Sure,' Forrest replied,  'it's Andy.'

'Andy?' exclaimed an exasperated
and frustrated Saint Peter.

'OK, I can understand how you got
your answers to my first two questions,
but just how in the world did you come up
with the name Andy as the first name of God?'

'Shucks, that was the easiest one of all,'
Forrest replied. 'I learnt it from the song,
ANDY WALKS WITH ME,
ANDY TALKS WITH ME,
ANDY TELLS ME I AM HIS OWN.'

Saint Peter opened the Pearly Gates,
and said:  'Run, Forrest, run.'

Holding in Memory

canticle for Mike CALLAHAN

1/18/12

R. (5b) In God I trust; I shall not fear.
Have mercy on me, O God, for men trample upon me;
all the day they press their attack against me.
My adversaries trample upon me all the day;
yes, many fight against me.
R. In God I trust; I shall not fear.
My wanderings you have counted;
my tears are stored in your flask;
are they not recorded in your book?
Then do my enemies turn back,
when I call upon you.
R. In God I trust; I shall not fear.
Now I know that God is with me.
In God, in whose promise I glory,
in God I trust without fear;
what can flesh do against me?
R. In God I trust; I shall not fear.
I am bound, O God, by vows to you;
your thank offerings I will fulfill.
For you have rescued me from death,
my feet, too, from stumbling;
that I may walk before God in the light of the living.
R. In God I trust; I shall not fear

Psalm Ps 56:2-3, 9-10a, 10b-11, 12-13

 To my old brown earth
And to my old blue sky
I'll now give these last few molecules of "I."

And you who sing,
And you who stand nearby,
I do charge you not to cry.

Guard well our human chain,
Watch well you keep it strong,
As long as sun will shine.

And this our home,
Keep pure and sweet and green,
For now I'm yours
And you are also mine.

The 'Happy' in "Happy New Year!"

It's still the first month of the new year 2012. Time for my very first post! "This is the day the Lord has made. Let us rejoice and be glad in it." Psalm 118:24 "Proclaim the year of favor from the Lord..." Isaiah 61:2 This is the year the Lord has made, let us rejoice and be glad in it for at least 366 days (It's a leap year!).

"I wish for those I love this New Year an opportunity to bring into the lives of those about them some measure of joy, to know the satisfaction of work well done, and to end the year a little wiser, a little kinder, and therefore a little happier. - Eleanor Roosevelt

"Why is a car's windshield so large and the rear view mirror so small? Because our past is not as important as our future. So look ahead and move on." - Peter Dring, Land O'Lakes, WI

"Often when we lose hope and think this is the end, God smiles from above and says, "Relax. It's just a bend, not the end." - Author unknown

"Reflect upon your present blessings of which all people have some.: - Charles Dickens

Studies- some recent and some not so recent show optimistic views of life decrease risk of heart disease! Reported in the Positive Health chapter of Flourish by Martin E.P. Seligman, published 2011. So Happy and Healthy do belong together in our traditional New Year's greeting!

Finally from A Year with Thomas Merton by Jonathan Montaldo: January 16 Content to Be Happy.  "You can make your life what you want. There are various ways of being happy. God gives us the freedom to create our own lives, according to His will, that is to say in the circumstances in which He has placed us... I am a happy person, and God has given me happiness..." I'm grateful I can say I am a happy person and God has given me happiness.
